F-35 Training System

Mission:

Blistering speeds, superior stealth capability, unmatched power and flexibility. The F-35 Lightning II captures the cutting-edge technology of tomorrow. The lucky few who will fly and maintain these 5th generation strike fighters will first have to master the necessary skills. Lockheed Martin recognises that the students in need of training are just as complex as the machines themselves. These pilots and maintainers require a training solution that encompasses every aspect of their education.

Requirements:

The F-35 Training System prepares pilots and maintainers to maximise the aircraft’s 5th generation capabilities through::

  • A comprehensive ground-based training system that employs the latest simulation technologies for effectiveness and affordability
  • Live flights for pilots and event-based training exercises with the aircraft for maintainers
  • A continuous learning environment to maintain currency
  • Australian industrial participation

Solution/Results:

The F-35 Training System integrates a variety of tools to prepare mission-ready pilots and maintainers. The single system blends the latest courseware, electronic classrooms, simulators, flight events and event-based maintenance training. A balance of skill and knowledge training are woven in to the program with innovative interactive courseware, desktop simulators and high-fidelity training devices. In all of the simulators, F-35 software is used to give students the most realistic experience possible while accelerating the process for software upgrades as the F-35 continues to develop and mature.

Training doesn't stop after schoolhouse graduation; both pilots and maintainers have the ability to remain in a continuous learning environment with access to all training courseware, applications and deployable training devices.

Turn-key Training

Mission:

Training the Australian Defence Force’s next generation of pilots requires a system that can efficiently build undergraduate pilot knowledge and skills prior to progressing onto the next level of training and ultimately, to advanced military aircraft. Through what is known as turn-key training, a Training Systems Integrator takes a student-centric approach to deliver an integrated solution as a service, focused on the training result and tailored for customer needs.

Requirements:

Training the next generation of pilots requires a Training System Integrator that can:

  • Design, deliver and operate an integrated training solution that provides shortest path to effective learning
  • Employ the most appropriate simulation technologies, adapted to student learning styles
  • Deliver reduced training times, lower training costs and increased fast-jet throughput
  • Better prepare pilots for the future

Solution/Results:

By applying Australia-based experience gained from the delivery of flying training in the Republic of Singapore Basic Wings Course, Lockheed Martin offers a proven, low-risk training system. Through a turn-key solution tailor made for the Australian Defence Force, we will deliver a capability that exceeds requirements, evolves with the introduction of 4th and 5th generation aircraft and provides the highest levels of safety and value for money.

Land Training

Mission:

As fuel costs rise and available range space shrinks, land forces worldwide are seeking more cost-effective training solutions to stay mission-ready. When the Australian Army was set to receive upgraded M1A1 Abrams tanks, they sought out new gunnery and driver training systems to help armoured crews and instructors prepare to operate the new vehicles.

Requirements:

Gunnery and tank driver training benefits from simulation technologies that:

  • Deliver a realistic, immersive training experience
  • Enable rigorous monitoring and after-action analysis of trainee performance
  • Reduce the expenses associated with live ammunition, operational costs of the fleet, and the risks inherent in live-fire training

Solution/Results:

Through the delivery of Advanced Gunnery Training Systems (AGTS) and Tank Driver Trainer (TDT), Lockheed Martin provided the Australian Army with increased capability to “train as you fight” for mission readiness.

AGTS is a reliable, flexible and cost-effective system to train warfighters in live fire and precision gunnery, including procedures, basic skills, crew coordination and crew drills. Tabletop trainers, deployable trainers, relocatable systems, mobile systems and permanent systems offer flexibility to take the trainer to exactly where the training needs to happen.

The TDT offers a full-motion training experience, enabling drivers to command a vehicle with confidence across a wide variety of terrain and weather conditions – all from within the classroom environment.
